Before getting into the design of DIY reverb pedal circuit, lets see the concept of reverberation first. Real reverberation happens in a performance chamber when the walls and every object inside reflects the sound back and forth.

As the sound bounces back and forth in three dimensional space, the reflections creates more and more complex pattern. The natural process shown in the Figure 1 is the illustration of reverberation.

In the old days, the only way to reproduce a reverberation effect is by using a real reverberation chamber. For good effect, someone should build a large room with complex geometry with carefully selected wall material. After that, he should place some loudspeakers at certain location and place a microphone at another location inside the chamber. The first attempt to mimic a room reverberation without a real reverberation chamber is done by a spring reverb tank see reference [1].

Figure 2. The audio signal drives an input coil that vibrate the spring at one end. The created vibration is then travels to the other end and bounce back and forth between two ends. Because of the different traveling speed of high and low frequency waves, the reflection produces more complex waves.

In addition, the spring joints adds more complex reflections in the middle of its traveling path. Moreover, different springs arrangement with different characteristics would produce rich and unique resonant characteristics.

Finally, a pickup coil picks the reverberated sound at the other end of the spring. The pick-up then returns the signal to the amplifier or the processing circuits. Many expert has researched reverberation effect processing in digital domain, and in my opinion can be classified on several mainstream methods.

Firstly, system response reproduction: this method treat the modeled system as a black-box. All we need to do is just measuring the output response after we apply an impulse input.

After getting the response pattern, a digital processor compute the convolution of the pattern and the input. Whether the modeled system is a real concert hall or a real spring, it will just work.

It would be very simple to implement but the convolution processing would require very high processing power to run. Secondly, physical modelling: this method analyze the physical process of the modeled system simulate every physical process in the computation.

This produces very realistic realistic sound but the computational cost could be high. However, it depends on the optimization or mathematical simplification of the model.

For example, you can see one example of spring reverb modelling at reference [3]. Lastly, synthetic modelling: this model construct a computation model that produce a perceived similar effect on the audio output. As long as the perceived result is similar, the computation model might not be related with the physical model.

Sometimes I see such model is just an oversimplified model of the physical. Similarly, approximation of the system response by trial and error computation experiment might produce such effect as well. For example, a Schroeder reverb [see ref [4]can be adjusted to mimic the medium-size hall reverberation by setting up some parameter to certain values.

After we analyze that the reverberation phenomenon as the complex echo pattern, we know the principle is simple. Therefore, we can intuitively build such reverb effect circuit using some delay line networks.Log in or create an account. The Echo Royal is a dual PTbased delay, capable of 1. My first PT based delay and it sounds great, has a nice analog tone despite being digital, I've read the chip is modeled after the Maestro Echoplex.

The build instructions were clear, only my third effects build and it came together nicely. I like how the PT keeps more high frequencies in the repeats than a bucket brigade delay, and it's easy to control when dubbing parts out with many repeats.

Some people might not like the noisy quality of slower repeats, but I think it adds to the character and charm. I thought the kit would include the feedback cut button feature that's in the assembled versions, but it's no biggie, though it would be cool to see how to implement that in the kit instructions or on the website.

Global Note:.The Echo Base is an analog-voiced delay with modulation, designed by Ian Maltby.

The modulation allows you to wobble the pitch of the delay around. There are also many modifications that can easily be done to give your Echo Base extended features — detailed instructions are in the documentation.

This feature can be toggled on or off with a switch. Lots of useful modifications are possible with the Echo Base, and are shown in detail in the accompanying documentation. The PCB is designed to fit in a b or larger box, allowing you to fit a ton of awesome and varied sounds into a tiny package.

The pots can be board-mounted, cutting down considerably on offboard wiring time. They can still be offboard if you prefer. This file includes wiring diagrams, schematic, bill of materials, and details on adding useful mods.

Meat Sphere filter. Tap Tempo Tremolo. There are lots of digital delay projects already, but the vast majority of them are based on the PT, which limits both the length of the delay and the sound quality.

The sound quality is very good, without being super-clean or sterile. The worst only problem is background hiss. Some of this is removed by the post-DAC filtering, but about 5mV remains. This is described below. The current firmware has five controls. Three are the standard delay controls: Delay time, Repeats, and Delay level.

Or you can cut the treble, and have the repeats get darker and darker, somewhat more cave-like and subterranean. Or you can do a bit of both, which gives you a band-limited sound on the repeats like someone on the telephone or a cheap radio.

The audio path keeps the dry signal entirely in the analog domain — it is never digitised and comes straight from the input buffer to the output mixer. The reasoning is that I can do noiseless switching in the firmware by providing a fade-out over a few milliseconds, and I can also offer the option of keeping the delay tails, which is important with so much delay available.

This enables you to add echoes to just a single phrase, and sounds great with the delay trails. The firmware also offers tap tempo as an alternative way of setting the delay time — just tap the interval you want on the other footswitch. The analog side is simple stuff.

The delay is followed by a differential op-amp since the DAC outputs a differential signal, and then two reconstruction filters. The final parts are the five control pots, and the two supplies. The ground planes are separated on the PCB too. On the other hand, the diode in parallel will short out any power supply which is plugged in in reverse and might blow up the power supply.

It makes for a neat build since most of it is on the PCB. Getting the LEDs the right height requires a little forethought, but none of it is hard. I could have used board-mounted jacks too, but I thought it better to leave people the option of having whatever jacks they like best. The PCB measures x70mm. It is designed to fit into a Hammond BB enclosure in landscape format as above. There are two main sources of noise in this circuit; bit quantisation noise, and the DAC noise.

They are what they are.

All we can do is try and get the best-possible signal-to-noise ratio from the circuit. As shown in the schematic, the circuit can handle signals up to 3V peak to peak. To get the best noise performance, you need to use as much of this as you can. These changes boost the signal at the pre-delay filter, and then reduce it again at the output mixer along with any noise.

The maximum input signal level is reduced to mVp-p. Here are the full details if you want to tweak the code, do your own PCB, or otherwise experiment with it.

DIY 4 Second Digital Delay

The interface consists of five knobs to control parameters in the code, and two footswitches. A change of firmware could turn this into something completely different. But thanks for the positive vibes! Modulated delay time with the TapLFO would be pretty wild. Since the delay time on this one is a CV input although So fast modulation might not be an option. Yes, please do that! This sounds great indeed! Looking forward to a demo!A stock circuit from the datasheet can nearly complete a guitar pedal project, and there are load of other applications for projects that require an analog-sounding digital delay more on this later.

For you circuit tweakers out there, I will include a Mods section to get you going in the right direction. Always get a datasheet for any unfamiliar components before you do any circuit work! Throughout this page, I will use snippets from the full datasheet to explain some of the results of my experience with the PT What I will do is try and express how the PT actually sounds.

The PT has a lot of unique features. This is no accident, as the PT has a lot of high-frequency digital noise that has a way of getting into the audio path and is tamed through filtering courtesy of the on-chip op amps. Whenever I see potentiometers, I think modification. See the Mods section later in this guide for some of the ideas you can try out! Circuit design is all about tradeoffs, and distortion can somewhat warm a tone up.

The familiar DIP packaging makes integrating it into through-hole designs an easy task. The internal memory is limited to 44K, which overall limits the quality of the repeats at certain settings. The following PT circuit schematics are included in the datasheet for the chip. If you do not have the exact component values for the capacitors, get as close as you can. These are very good places to start.

I prefer to build unfamiliar circuits piece by piece and bring them together once they are functioning correctly. Build a simple PT circuit, test it, and integrate it with your next stage of development. Several great schematics are available online. However, sometimes you need to paint outside the lines….

Anything below that may cause the PT to latch up, requiring a reset turn to power to the IC off and then on again. Especially take care that the resistance is at least 1k or greater when the PT first starts up see datasheet application note below. This is actually audible and a great lead-in to our next modification.

So get your simple PT circuit running, plug in a guitar and amplifier, and turn the power off, then on. What you will hear is a modulated delay with some pitch manipulation.

PT2399 Digital Delay IC

Very cool! There are many great PT projects out there! This integrated circuit has also demonstrated that with a careful design and good tuning, could be a fantastic sounding solution. With a minimum delay of 30ms and a maximum of ms that could be extended up to 1 second at the expense of sound quality makes it perfect for delay, echo and reverb effects. The official Princeton Technology PT datasheet is vague and many of the internal functions of the IC are not explained either, giving the foundations for mods and think-out-of-the-box solutions.
